Large octavo, xvi, 604pp. Quarter green morocco, title stamped in gilt on the spine, pebbled green cloth boards. Solid text block, both hinges reinforced with cloth. Splash mark to foredge, limited impact to text. Internally clean. Signed twice by Maj. General Steele. Inscribed on the second free endpaper: "F. Steele / Major Genl. / Brazos Santiago / June 25, 1865." Major General Frederick Steele (1819-1868) arrived on the Texas coast in June 1865, after the formal collapse of Confederate authority in the Trans-Mississippi. By June 10, Steele's division of roughly 6,000 men had landed at Brazos Santiago, the barrier-island port near the mouth of the Rio Grande. Union forces were ordered to occupy South Texas, control the border, and watch French-backed imperial government in Mexico. A West Point graduate of 1843 and Mexican War veteran, Steele commanded troops in the Mississippi Valley, including during the Arkansas Post and Vicksburg campaigns. His principal victory came in September 1863, when Union forces under his command captured Little Rock, giving the United States control of northern Arkansas and forcing the Confederate state government to relocate. In 1864, Steele led the Camden Expedition, a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful campaign tied to the larger Red River Campaign.
