She has long since figured among the great names of the international photography scene, and now her first monograph, which accompanies the retrospective exhibition of her work in Paris, Winterthur and Amsterdam, is available in European book- shops. Rineke Dijkstra, who was born in Sittard in Holland in 1959, studied at the Rietveld Akademie, Amsterdam and, after doing some commissioned work for magazines, soon found international recognition for her eloquent coloured portrait series of teenagers and young adults. She took photographs - sometimes over long periods of time - of boys and girls of different nationalities on the beach, the development of an adolescent Bosnian girl refugee at intervals of two years, young mothers shortly after the birth of their children, young Israelis before and after their recruitment into the army, young bullfighters after the fight... Dijkstra's "classical" portraits register the changes brought about in the faces and bodily attitudes of young people by an impor- tant experience or a crucial event.

Rineke Dijkstra, who now lives in Amsterdam and Berlin, received the Kodak Award Nederland in 1987 and was nominated for the Young European Photographers in 1990; she received the Werner Mantz Award in 1994 and the Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize in 1999.

Rineke Dijkstra, 1959 im holländischen Sittard geboren, studierte an der Rietveld Akademie, Amsterdam, und fand nach anfänglichen Auftrags- arbeiten für Magazine schnell internationale Aner- kennung mit ihren eindringlichen, farbigen Portrait- serien von Teenagern und jungen Erwachsenen. Sie fotografierte-zum Teil über längere Zeiträume hinweg-Jungen und Mädchen unterschiedlicher Nationalitäten am Strand, das Heranwachsen eines bosnischen Flüchtlingsmädchens im Zweijahres- rhythmus, junge Mütter kurz nach der Geburt ihres Kindes, israelische Jugendliche vor und nach dem Eintritt in die Armee, junge Toreros unmittelbar nach dem Kampf... In Dijkstras "klassischen" Portraits werden Veränderungen sichtbar, die ein entscheidendes Ereignis, eine prägende Erfahrung in den Gesichtern und Körperhaltungen junger Menschen bewirken.

Rineke Dijkstra, die heute in Amsterdam und Berlin lebt, wurde 1987 mit dem Kodak Award Nederland ausgezeichnet und 1990 für Young European Photographers nominiert; 1994 erhielt sie den Werner Mantz Award und 1999 den Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize.
