During the 1980s and 1990s, there has been heightened awareness and preoccupation with racial issues. In this new oral history, Terkel explores Americans' inner feelings and values pertaining to the subject of race. Racial attitudes are examined from a multiracial and multicultural perspective. As with Terkel's earlier works, his study is primarily centered in Chicago, but the people selected for interviews represent a broad spectrum of society; several have appeared in Terkel's previous books. Terkel demonstrates how very skilled he is at drawing out interviewees' intrinsic feelings on race. This work is a valuable accompaniment to Terkel's Working ( LJ 12/15/74), American Dreams Lost and Found ( LJ 11/1/80), and Great Divide ( LJ 10/1/88). Recommended for public and academic libraries.
