Von Richthoffen was far from a natural-born pilot but he learned rapidly and became highly proficient. Over the years any people have tried to present him as a man who could not have achieved his 80 recorded victories without the support of his Jasta pilots, two of whom were supposedly detailed to protect his tail while he made the kills. This is far from the truth; such a man would not have been held by high esteem by his men who would certainly have not celebrated his memory for many years after WWI.
