Collection of retail ephemera: 20 leaves of blank letter stock (11"x .5 "; 27.7 x 21.7 cms) all printed with the letterhead in red "Gom Hong & Co. 709 King Street Seattle, Washington" and in Chinese beneath, the letter stock on fine paper with 9 printed columns in red for Chinese writing; 2 receipts date-stamped October 1937 and 2 statements dated 1937 and 1940 for purchases from Seattle wholesaler grocers Schwabacher Bros. & Co on their letterhead; 7 receipts from the Plymouth Poultry Company, 1928 Pike Place all from May -July 1937; 2 business bank cheques issued by Gom Hong Co drawn on their account with the National Bank of Commerce, Seattle, to James Henry Packing Co from May 1952, punched "Paid" and stamped on the verso by the bank and the payee; Bank of America Customer's Draft October 1937 issued to Gom Hong Co by "Kwong" Yick & Co. (signed) and stamped on the verso by the Oriental branch, Bank of America, San Francisco; 3 "Store Copy" letterhead receipts in Chinese for customer purchases from Gom Hong Co, 1946. General wear and age-toning, but overall in very good condition, the blank letter stock bright and clean. Realia spanning an almost twenty year period (1937-1952) relating to Seattle Chinatown grocer and wholesaler Gom Hong Co, founded in the 1930s. Their orders to Seattle businesses Plymouth Poultry Co (for live poultry); Schwabacher Bros for canned foods, and beverages (including "Canada Dry Ginger Ale"); sizeable cheques to the long-lived and prominent James Henry Packing Co. and draft from Kwong [Kong] Yick & Co. (the pioneer investment Company founded in 1910 by a group from the Chinese American community) paint a picture of a growing, diversifying and prosperous business at a time when opportunities for, and attitudes towards migrant enterprises were challenging.
