4to., 262pp. Solid First Illustrated Edition of this adventure/fantasy from the author most noted for his classic supernatural tale, "The King in Yellow". Bound in publisher's red cloth with lettering in gilt on spine and upon a black cloth spine label. Pirate illustration on front board. Illustrated end-papers, frontispiece and full-page plates. Square and tight with mild edge-wear. Rear hinge starting but firm. Gilt rubbing off though still legible. Spine illustration rubbed off. Some spotting to prelims and a small stain on the frontis page though not impacting illustration. Lightly tipped in bookplate on the front paste-down. Tipped in at rear is a letter with the original mailing envelope, all in Chamber's hand, to Poet and Essayist, among other things, Edmund Clarence Steadman, who evidently asked for and is receiving permission to use some of Chambers' poetry in "An American Anthology", that Stedman was editing. The letter is dated 1899 when the anthology was published though it was tipped into this book published 30 years later. Behind this letter, affixed t the end-paper, is the original mailing envelope addressed to Steadman in Chambers' hand. A very presentable collectable copy of a quite uncommon title and the letter is very scarce. Seller Inventory # 018590
