PROOF COPY, inscribed by the author to upper wrapper verso, "For Hugh MacDiarmid on his eightieth birthday; with admiration and respect, John Montague". American-born, Montague was raised in Ireland and became a professor of literature on both sides of the Atlantic. He was appointed the first occupant of the Ireland Chair of Poetry. Praised by Hugh MacDiarmid in Agenda as "a wonderful achievement", The Rough Field has been hailed as the most significant attempt in poetry to understand Northern Ireland's troubled history and was a talisman for the next generation of Ulster poets, notably Heaney, Longley and Mahon. Octavo. Stapled wrappers. 'Proof Copy' slip tipped-in to upper wrapper. A little creasing to corners and lightly toned to edges of wrappers, but clean and fresh internally. Near fine. An excellent association copy.
