Pierce, Danny. SAD SOLOIST. Edching, 1958. Signed and dated in pencil. Edition size not known. 11 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches (plate), 16 1/2 x 13 inches (sheet). Excellent condition. Daniel P. (Danny) Pierce (September 10, 1920 - March 6, 2014) was a painter, printmaker and sculptor. He taught printmaking at several universities, and wrote, illustrated and printed his own books at The Red Door Press in Kent, Washington.Danny Pierce (1920-2014)was a book artist who produced books entirely on his own; "he writes the text, handsets the type, cuts the blocks, handprints editions of 25 to 100 copies, and constructs specially designed boxes for each volume, creating works with a deep, personal quality." (Preface to "Danny: 36 years at the Red Door Studio," a 1995 exhibition at the University of Wisconsin). He was also a printmaker. He taught book arts and printmaking at the University of Alaska and the University of Wisconsin.
