One-page ALS (measuring ~5 in. x 7.25 in.) to J.S. Black discussing Tyler's contempt for William Seward: "one of the worst and most despicable men in the history of political life." In Very Good condition with mild age age toning, mild wear to corners and edges, remnants of orange adhesive along spine, and faint offsetting to reverse (from previous owner's included background information). RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville, Room A, General Ephemera Part 2. Samuel Tyler (1809-1877) was an American lawyer, jurist, and writer from Maryland, best known for his work on constitutional law and his connections with the antebellum legal establishment. Tyler wrote extensively on jurisprudence, including A Discourse of the Baconian Philosophy (1844) and later essays on the U.S. Constitution and natural law, situating himself in debates about states' rights and the philosophical underpinnings of American governance. He was also active in Maryland legal and political circles throughout the mid-19th century. In this revealing letter, Tyler expresses his disdain for William H. Seward (Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson). Seward was a central figure in Union policy, architect of the Alaska Purchase, and a lightning rod for both admiration and criticism during and after the Civil War. Tyler's disparagement of Seward, written just a year after Seward's death, reflects the persistence of sectional bitterness in Reconstruction-era America. 1402164. Special Collections - Upstairs.
