Folio (44.5cm); emerald green cloth-covered boards, spine and fore-edges bound in black morocco, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; publisher's original black cloth slipcase; [48]pp, with six large photogravures by Aaron Siskind. Fine in a Fine slipcase, Fine press edition of this poem from Whitman's 1856 collection, Leaves of Grass, brought to life by American photographer Aaron Siskind (1903-1991). "The illustrations for Song of the Open Road transform Whitman's symbolic journeyings into the language of modern urbanism.The photographer's interpretation lies in the pictures he took not far from his home in Providence, R.I. of tar poured into the cracks of light-colored concrete roads, forming swirls and curves and parallel lines, cheerful or brooding markings on a gritty surface that is rendered almost microscopically and enlarged into a striking textural background for each of the six photographs" (from the prospectus).
