Marcy and Phil Dunlap come with their parents from the North to Aiken, where their father is doing historical research. The family stays at Telfair Inn (patterned after the Willcox), which is in a state of dilapidation. In fact, one part of the sprawling old inn has been targeted for demolition. The antagonist, eccentric old Mr. Crowe, frightens young Marcy. It is obvious he does not want the Dunlaps, because of the children, to stay in the inn. When he chases Marcy and Phil with his cane, they decide he is trying to hide something. Mysterious things start to take place, giving Phil the idea to explore the unused part of the old inn. What they find out not only surprises them but teaches a lesson in compassion.

About the Author

Idella Bodie retired as a high school English and Creative Writing teacher in 1985 after teaching for 31 years. Mrs. Bodie has been writing for young readers for more than thirty years. Her first book, The Secret of Telfair Inn, published in 1971 by Sandlapper Publishing is still in print. She is now the author of 22 books for older elementary and middle school students that involve South Carolina history and geography. Some of Mrs. Bodie s books are used in schools across South Carolina having been incorporated into school curriculums. Most recently, she has completed a series about heroes and heroines of the Revolutionary War. Mrs. Bodie says she writes about more than historical places in South Carolina. I always try to focus on the people when I write about history, she said. Character is the most important thing.
