EDWIN STANTON (1814-1869). Stanton was President Lincolns second Secretary of War; he proved to be an efficient manager but irritable man. When President Andrew Johnson dismissed Stanton from the War Department, his Congressional enemies impeached the President. DS. 1pg. 8 x 10. September 5, 1863. Washington. A partly-printed document signed Edwin M Stanton addressed to Second Lieutenant George J. Brown of the Invalid Corps. He informed Brown that the President of the United Sates has appointed you Second Lieutenant in the Invalid Corps in the service of the United States, to rank as such from the fifty day of September, one thousand eight hundred and sixty three. The document has two filing folds and is in fine condition with a large autograph.
