Back is an artist who, for the past 20 years, has left her home each morning before breakfast to take a one-mile walk for reasons of health. The record of her observations became a "conscious immersion in the body of life," as she began to study seven different ecological communities including thickets, desert, swamp, forest, and river. In each "life zone" she describes the geology of the land and the bird, animal, and plant life. She recounts their physical appearance and identifying behaviors in a detailed and personal manner. Much like a diary in tone, these notes are a straightforward depiction of one small area of Wyoming, which yet contains many marvels and surprises. For general reading enjoyment. Carol J.
