Czech-born astronomer who, on behalf of the U.S. Air Force, was responsible for the first-ever detailed contour map of the moon's entire surface. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Washington, DC on 1969 September (also with 1969 July 20 "Moon Landing" cancellation) and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 10-cent "First Man on the Moon" stamp at upper right. Fine. At lower left, in blue fineline, Kopal signs large and bold. With original transmittal envelope and 4" X 5" printed University of Manchester "With the Compliments / of / Professor Z. Kopal" slip.
