About this Item
This famed U.S. Air Force officer during the Vietnam War was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and endured six years of torture as a prisoner of war; among many other distinctions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Signed FDC, 6½" X 3½", postally cancelled in Arlington, Virginia on 11 November 1979 and with "First Day of Issue" so stamped. Fine. Single 15-cent "Honoring Vietnam Veterans" U.S. postage stamp at upper right and large ArtCraft cachet at left. Near the center, Thorsness signs boldly in black fineline and adds "C.B.U." (cluster bomb unit). Also signed at center by noted Vietnam War vice admiral Joseph Metcalf III (1927-2007). Accompanied by a pristine glossy black-and-white 10" X 8" photograph, side-by-side head-and-shoulders portraits in uniform of Medal of Honor recipients Thorsness and Harold Furlong. A superb pair.
