He wore four "hats" for the operation: Deputy Supreme Allied Commander, Mediterranean Theater; Commanding General NATOUSA; Commander, Advanced Detachment AFHQ; and Commanding General, 6th Army Group. Devers was appointed to these positions based upon his administrative qualifications. However, he spent a great deal of his time at the front, arriving on Anzio beach the day after the invasion. During his career he advanced the usage of battlefield weapons including the Sherman tank and the M-16 rifle.
