Autograph letter signed ('W Ralegh'), written during his governorship of Jersey, 27 lines written on one page, TO: My verie loving friends The Bailife and Justices of Jersey . concerning 'the controversies between Mr. John de Carteret and John Dumaresq'; dated: The Court at Whitehall, 15th December, 1601, and signed W Ralegh. Beautifully framed, along with two period engravings, one of Ralegh and one of Queen Elizabeth I. The letter is damp stained and at one stage folded twice, with a piece torn out of the blank part. A full transcription of the letter is available upon request. Frame measures 27.5" x 38". Provenance: By descent from the de Carteret family, acquired through auction and most recently on display at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Old Salem, North Carolina. The letter is a known one from Ralegh, and catalogued as Letter No. 154 in Agnes Latham's definitive and comprehensive book The Letters of Sir Walter Ralegh, published in 1999. A truly remarkable and historic piece, with Ralegh signed letters being exceptionally scarce on the market. Custom framed and ready for display.
