Small archive of artist Gloria Yaroslava Surmach Mills, is a noted artist, author and illustrator. One of her specialties is the Ukranian art of painting in reverse on glass. She illustrated a number of children's books, including Alvin Tresselt's *The Mitten: An Old Ukranian Folktale.* Yaroslava was married to author C. Wright Mills. Tresselt was a prolific author of children's books. His book, *White Snow, Bright Snow,* illustrated by Roger Duvoisin, was awarded the 1948 Caldecott Medal. The small archive consists of: 1. Autograph Letter Signed from Yaroslava Surmach Mills to Alvin Tresselt. Two quarto pages (circa 45 lines) from Switzerland, June 29, 1961, to "Dear Alvin et al." The letter states in part: "It's almost time to leave this fabulous place. We hit the road next week & will just travel & camp around Europe… Now that summer has come to the Alps, we've really fallen in love with our 'Violette' as this villa is called. You would really go wild over it, Alvin- both inside & out. [I] Have made a drawing for you, it shows only half the house (Enclosed) & wonder if you could have it [photo]statted (have them do it in gray line, s/s, matte) & mail one to my folks. so they can see what it looks like. Please save the neg. as I'd like it later ok? Thanks. [She goes on, in some detail, describing the house, both interior, and surrounding land]. "Am also enclosing a story by a friend [Nina Landau] (who thinks it's easy to write children's stories; heard that before?). But it sounded kind of nice to me so I promised to send it on. If you like it- or reject it, please send check or story to Nina Landau… She continues with personal and family details, closing with "Much Love, Yaroslava! 2. -Original signed ink drawing by (Gloria) Yaroslava Surmach Mills, of "La Violette, June 1961," her temporary Swiss residence mentioned in the above letter. Very detailed ink drawing, measuring 8 1/4 by 12 inches (with three "white-out" marks in upper margin), signed in lower right corner: "Yaroslava." Short closed tear in upper margin, else near fine. 3. Photostat. Mechanically reproduced copy of the above drawing, 8 1/4 by 12 inches [the artist mentions having Alvin Tresselt get the drawing "statted"]. Near fine. 4. -Typed manuscript by Nina Landau, of a children's story, entitled: *A Koala Bear Named Pear.* Quarto. Two pages (51) typed lines, with title ink author's(?) pencil holograph. Few neat ink corrections (in Alvin Tresselt's? hand). Lightly creased; near fine. 5. Carbon typescript copy of a typed letter from Alvin Tresselt to Gloria Yaroslava Surmach Mills. One quarto page, 10 lines, [Redding, CT], July 29th, 1985, to "Dear Yara." The letter thanks "Yara" for "the egg," and includes personal and family news 6. Autograph card signed by Gloria Yaroslava Surmach Mills, to "Dear Alvin & Blossom!" (Sixteen lines), in Yaroslava's ink holograph. [Switzerland], [circa 1985]. Primarily personal and travel details (and birthday greetings to Blossom) [Alvin's wife]. Signed "Much love, Yara, alias Gloria." The front panel of the card [New York: Surma Book & Music Co., 1973], reproduces, in color, artwork by Yaroslava Surmach Mills. 7. *The Tale of Yaroslava and the Glasspaintings* by Yaroslava Surmach Mills. (West Nyack, NY): [Privately Printed for the Author], [circa 1985?]. A promotional pamphlet by the artist, about her reverse "glasspainting." Single sheet, folded to make eight (12mo) pages, illustrated (by the artist). A small but nice little correspondence with related drawing. Seller Inventory # 515902
