ABOUT THE ARTIST Helge Ernst (1916 - 1991) was a Danish painter, graphic artist, printmaker, designer, and filmmaker whose career spanned painting, engraving, design, and experimental film. Born in Copenhagen to bookbinder Frederik Ernst and Dagmar Martine Christense Sørensen, he was largely self-taught and began exhibiting in 1938 at the Autumn Art Exhibition in Copenhagen. Ernst's career bridged traditional Danish figurative painting with modern abstraction, and he remains a significant figure in 20th-century Danish art, remembered for both his visual innovation and his role in promoting contemporary art through diverse media.
