318, frontispiece of the author in Antarctica, 4 further black and white plates, folding map at the back (Sketch Map to Illustrate Journeys of the Western Geological Parties". Published in the Collins Pocker Classics series no. 329. Dustjacket very good, price clipped, book and covers near new. Signature of the author on half-title "With Best Wishes from Mountevans" aka Admiral E.R.G.R. Evans (1881-1957), who " was seconded from the Navy to the Discovery Expedition of the Antarctic in 1901-04, when he served on the crew of the relief ship, and afterwards began planning his own Antarctic expedition. However, he suspended this plan when offered the post of second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913, as captain of the expedition ship Terra Nova. He accompanied Scott to within 150 miles of the Pole, but later became seriously ill with scurvy and only narrowly survived the return journey." He was elevated to the peerage in 1945 as Baron Mountevans of Chelsea in the County of London, and sat on the Labour benches. No date, owner inscription dated 1947. Size: 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall.
