1st printing of the 2nd edition of the author's first book published in July 2003, 12 months after the 1st hardcover edition and 15 years prior to the special edition. This copy is SIGNED by Chiang on the title page with a black ballpoint pen, and he added the year, 2024. LAID-IN is event ephemera, including a 4-page, 4-colour program promoting Chiang's participation in the reading series. A trade paperback with card covers. No markings by a previous owner or retailer, and the spine is not creased. There is typical shelf wear to the surface of the covers, but they are otherwise unaffected by age or the sun. The covers have curled at the fore-edges from handling. The corners of the covers have softened, and three of the four corners show the beginnings of separation between the cover and the paper backing. The top and bottom corners of the first three dozen pages of the text have softened and curled, and the top corner of 5-6 pages spread throughout the text were creased. The collection includes "Story of Your Life", which served as the basis of the screenplay for the movie Arrival and a story published for the first time here: "Liking What You See: A Documentary." Chiang is one of the most highly-decorated writers of SF of our time.…

Now, collected here for the first time are all seven of this extraordinary writer's stories so far-plus an eighth story written especially for this volume.
What if men built a tower from Earth to Heaven-and broke through to Heaven's other side? What if we discovered that the fundamentals of mathematics were arbitrary and inconsistent? What if there were a science of naming things that calls life into being from inanimate matter? What if exposure to an alien language forever changed our perception of time? What if all the beliefs of fundamentalist Christianity were literally true, and the sight of sinners being swallowed into fiery pits were a routine event on city streets? These are the kinds of outrageous questions posed by the stories of Ted Chiang. Stories of your life . . . and others.

Store description
Operating continuously since 2004, SIGNAL BOOKS specializes in autographed fiction in collector's condition. All books are 1st printings of the 1st edition, unless otherwise noted. All dust jackets are protected in a clear, acid-free sleeve. And 85% of our book inventory is autographed by the author because SB is located near Toronto, an international hub for author events. Regarding condition, we believe in full and frank disclosure. We describe objects conservatively and thoroughly so you won't have any unpleasant surprises. And you may rely on us to take care in packing your order so it will arrive as described. If you've grown tired of buying from dealers who lack the expertise or the willingness to fully describe flaws or who are purposely vague in their descriptions, buy from us and put that aggravation behind you. We ship in sturdy boxes - NOT self-mailers or padded envelopes. And all sales regardless of purchase price are bubble-wrapped and surrounded by Styrofoam peanuts. Please browse our catalogs, including autographed first books, books signed by deceased authors, books signed and dated in the year of publication and Comic Books-Action Figures.
