Portrait etching by Samuel Hollyer, 6 x 8 inches, of Carlyle, whose works include "The French Revolution" and "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History." The engraving is signed in pencil by Hollyer (1826-1919), considered the last of the old school of American line-engravers, remembered for his landscapes, bookplates, and oft-reproduced portraits of famous historical figures. A stunning piece.
