London. Andre Deutsch Limited. 1979. First United Kingdom Edition. Two Volumes. Quartos. (9 x 6 1/2). 1745 pp. in two volumes. With a sentimental inscription written on the half-title page in volume 1 by Ernest Schwiebert addressed to his long-time friend, fishing companion and book author, Gene Hill. Mr. Schwiebert has also drawn in ink an artificial fly above his inscription (by the way, isn't it maddening when you a read a cataloger's listing of a book with an author's inscription and it's described as "warm;" that's always struck me like a reference to waffle syrup, or maybe toast, too warm to the touch - for some reason this quirkiness is frequently employed by sellers of sporting books). Volume 2 is also signed by Ernest Schwiebert and it also has a fly drawn by him. Color plates showing many trout species and a large number of artificial flies, all drawn and illustrated by the author. There are hundreds of text illustrations. A monumental work which has influenced the direction and scope of many subsequent works on trout and trout fishing. The two books are bound in the publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles on the spines. The text sheets were printed by Dutton, the American publisher, for the U. K. edition. Green cloth slip case with a colored plate affixed to the side panel. Nice books. Fine in a near fine slip case with a little fading.
