In this letter, Fairbanks explains his reasons for not getting in touch before finishing the editing for a film, in part: "I understand you are going to run 'The Exile' Sunday night.The trade press, as you probably noticed, were surprisingly kind to me and, as I followed your advice implicitly, I can only assume that you bribed them or otherwise spoke in my behalf. Between ourselves, I like the picture.I will say, however, that I don't think it has the makings of a smash success.Some time ago, you were kind enough to suggest that you would look at the picture in its rough stage and advise me on cutting. I was very anxious to do this, and when the other night, at Connie's, you made a vague reference to it, I was very embarrassed.as you didn't repeat your proposal to look at it unedited, I was shy of reminding you.Perhaps, also, I may take a rain check on it so that when I get 'The O'Flynn' finished, I can drag it over to you."
