Best known as co-inventor of the Holt-Dern ore roasting process for extracting silver from low-grade ore, this mining businessman turned Democratic politician served as the sixth governor of Utah (1925-33) and a Franklin Roosevelt's first Secretary of War (1933-36). TNS, 1p, heavy stock 5" X 3" correspondence card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. On buff card with "War Department" embossed at upper right, Dern notes he is "pleased to add my autograph to your collection," signing boldly in black at the close.
