This career Army officer joined the Maine Volunteer Infantry at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, and was active with the 4th Army Corps in World War One; in 1935 he was promoted to brigadier general. TNS,1p, 7¼" X 10½", Fort Sheridan, IL, 1935 March 5. Addressed to Louis Thuringer. Near fine. On letterhead of "The Commanding General," Merrill offers a taut "Thank you for your good wishes" and signs boldly in full -- no doubt he was congratulated on his new rank of brigadier general.
