What Eisenhower was to World War Two this U.S. Army general better known as "Black Jack" was to World War One as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (1917-20) -- he actually mentored all the head honchos of WW2, including Ike, Bradley, Marshall, MacArthur, Patton and others; in 1921 he was named Chief of Staff of the United States Army, where he remained until retirement in 1924.
