About this Item
This Tennessee humorist and novelist authored such popular sidesplitters as "A Kentucky Colonel" (1890) and "Old Lim Jucklin" (1905). TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 1939 June 14. Addressed to "My Dear Professor" (Albert Johannsen, dime novel authority and author of "The House of Beadle and Adams"). Fine. Johannsen, researching his "penny dreadful" opus, had contacted Read for information about one of the most famous dime novelists, "Colonel" Prentiss Ingraham (1843-1904), a colorful soldier of fortune who cranked out some 700 dime novels. Writing shortly before his death, Read replies, ".the countenance of Colonel Ingraham came into memory; but I cannot recall anything regarding him. He has staggered forth from minute recollection.".
