About this Item
1/2 page. Small folio. Addressed to James Lyons in New York and dated February 14, 1959. On personal letterhead, with Mitropoulos's name printed in blue at head. A deeply personal letter in the year before Mitropoulous died. The conductor and composer humbly thanks his correspondent for sending a "touching note" and the article from his magazine, saying "I never really realized fully how much I meant to you. But, being born without a vain nature, in all of my career I was never aware of how much I meant to the public, and never felt easy, in fact embarrassed, before my admirers." He goes on to say that the "sudden blow to my physical body gave me just as great a shock in seeing how much people really were interested in me ." Lightly creased at two horizontal folds. A Greek-born American conductor, composers, and pianist, Mitropoulos led and/or conducted many of the major symphony orchestras. As regards his compositional activities, "After many years of neglect, Mitropoulos s music was subject to reappraisal by several Greek musicologists in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and along with Nikos Skalkottas he is now highly regarded as a key figure in early Greek modernism in music."
