[xii] 228 pp + 1 fold-out map. Red cloth. Rose Lesser was born in Berlin in 1908 and lived in Japan from 1929. During that time she experienced earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and the horror of world war II. Here she presents a personal account of her experiences, and considers the effect of generation after generation of disasters on the formation of the Japanese character. Copiously illustrated in b&w and a little colour with photographs, maps, diagrams, drawings, meteorological charts, aerial & satellite images and some contemporary artwork. English language edition. First published in German in 1981. With a slip of comments on the German version & the author's business card laid in.
