U.S. Coast Guard World War Two Naval Exploits: A Memoir Book Two / Men of Menkar: A Memoir Book Three. Some U.S. World War Two historians stated that the U.S. Coast Guard Secret Loran Program, which made possible the B-29 high level bombing of the Japanese mainland was one of the major contributions to the early defeat of the Japanese Empire. A Coast Guard Warrant Boatswain, temporarily promoted to Lieutenant, became commanding Officer of the U.S.S. MENKAR. As a prelude to his selection for this important Coast Guard secret military assignment the author takes the reader back in time to 1941 in southeastern Alaska where the author, as Senior Officer Present (SOP) and in command of a 95-foot halibut fishing boat converted to a Navy Patrol Vessel YP-251, rams and takes part in the destruction of the Japanese submarine RO-32. Two weeks later the author id transferred to the South Pacific as navigator of the Coast Guard-manned combat transport U.S.S. HUNTER LIGGETT and takes part in the invasion of Guadalcanal and Bougainville in the role of Staff Navigator to Commodore Laurence Fairfax Reifsnider, Commander of the U.S.. Navy Third Amphibious Force of twelve attack transports. Book two is a war diary which chronicles this Alaskan and South Pacific period of service. Book three, also contained herein, is the story of the Men of the MENKAR AK-123. --- excerpt from book's back cover
