14 x 19 3/4", goauche on board (the thick chipboard backing of a large format sketchbook). Signed at verso, with the additional numeral 64 - likely the date, which would be consistent with the style. A nocturnal California dreamscape painting, one of her most successful that we've seen from the period, featuring oddly tilted buildings in the foreground, and a tree with leaves turned incandescent. The scene is given an eery dynamicism from the long shadows of the trees, probably from moonlight, which follow the vigorious horizontal strokes with which the foreground and horizon are painted. The painting suffers from a strong vertical crease which has caused cracking to the surface (see photographs), and rubbing to extremities, along with some spotting to right margin. Fair only, but a gorgeous and haunting painting from one of the most fascinating figures of the San Francisco Renaissance, and a great candidate for restoration. Seller Inventory # 30979
