Variations on The Birth of Jacob

Winner of the Saskatchewan Book Award. Continuing his defiance of the "poetry police," Berzensky has smuggled into the world a new collection of poems that insist on the subversive power of the imagination to set us free. Against the tyrany and despair of the twentieth-century, he offers light and liberation, for in this book of variations, the moment of birth "cancels death forever," and "there are always/new holes in the air/for us to leap through."

Steven Michael Berzensky moved to Canada from California in 1965. He is the author of four previous collections of poetry, Moving In from Paradise, Children on the Edge of Space, The Blue Pools of Paradise, Dark Halo, and numerous chapbooks. He has seved as editor of Grain, as Yorkton's first writer-in-residence, and as an active and integral part of literary life on the prairies for many years. He currently lives and works in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
