This is a signed copy of "VETERINARY MEDICINES - Their Actions and Uses: With a Copious Appendix on the Diseases of the Domesticated Animals" by Finlay Dun. 1864 3rd edition (stated); Edmonston and Douglas; Edinburgh, UK. This copy is signed/inscribed by the author on the half title page, as follows: "To Mr. William Dyer Providence R.I. With the best wishes of Finlay Dun." Large book with 586 numbered pages. There is an Index at the back. Dun was a lecturer at the Edinburgh veterinary school. First published in 1854, his book was the first British attempt to present a rational and scientific approach to veterinary medicine. Here are some examples of the contents: Sedatives; On Horses, Cattle, and Dogs; Narcotics; Anaesthetics; Blood-Letting; Refrigerants; Alcohol; Ether; Ginger; Chlorine; Fractures - Strains or Sprains; Worms; Distemper; Horse-Shoeing; Inflammation; Eczema; Colic; Opium; Hemlock; Nux Vomica; Silver and its Medical Compounds; Sweet Spirit of Nitre.and much more. Condition: Clean front cover and spine. There are a couple small stains on the back cover. There is a crack at the front hinge between the half title page and title page resulting in the front cover being shaky. Heavy foxing to the first and last dozen or so pages, scattered foxing to the pages in between. The front end paper has a 1" tear at the top edge, and what appears to be blue pencil markings over the world "Medicines" in the title. Page 31 has a 1/2" crinkled area at the top edge. Small tear at the top edge of the rear end paper. Author inscription written in ink on the half title page. Many pages are still attached along the top edge. Overall the book is in Good condition.
