From the Inside Flap
With many unique books, and this her first offset edition, to her credit, H. Terry Braunstein is recognized as one of the foremost book artists in the U.S. today. Her books -- extended photomontages whose contents are culled from popular magazines -- function not as so many fixed pictures, but work cinematically as a progression of images presented through time and space. Braunstein describes the double-page spreads of her books as stages for activity, and she speaks of the ubiquitous human images which populate them as actors playing out a scenario.
Imaginative transformation is the key to both the making and the appreciation of her books. Braunstein's creative process is an intuitive, improvisatory search and selecting of images that when juxtaposed inspire the most extraordinary meanings. Photojournalistic sources serve this end well, since such pictures are heavily loaded with specific information -- preconceived meanings that become radically transformed when wrenched from their original context and imposed into an alien scenario.
Braunstein's genius is in finding and transforming images that simulate the mind's desire to conjure meaning from a disjointed and improbable world. In this her art is imitative of life -- not of its overt appearances, to be sure, but in the excitation of the mental process whereby we perceive and fabricate meaning from the myriad stimuli that animate every hour of our waking or our dreaming lives. Sensibility, wrote Henry James is "the very atmosphere of the mind." Indeed, the windows that are Braunstein's books open into that atmosphere.
