A scarce early 19th-century printing of the four popular pseudo-Aristotelian manuals on procreation, gestation, and childbirth, signed by Henry Poole with the mysterious inscription 'from a lady.' This Henry Poole of London was likely the Henry Poole from (1814-1876), from the prominent Poole family of London clothiers who would later establish Henry Poole & Co. on Savile Row, tailors to royalty and the British elite. In 1831, he would have been approximately 17 years old a young gentleman from a respectable, well-connected family. His ownership of this provocative text is particularly intriguing given his family's social standing.a young gentleman in 1831 when he inscribed this volume a provocative choice for the era, as these texts contained frank discussions of human sexuality, reproduction, and childbirth that remained shocking to Georgian and early Victorian sensibilities. The inscription suggests this may have been a clandestine gift, perhaps from a lover or confidante, adding intrigue to an already controversial work.…

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
