Item description from seller

Large octavo, 51pp. About fine in the publisher's deep blue buckram, stamped in gilt. Trace of foxing to the firront endpapers, else clean, bright, and sound. One of 176 copies of this limited issue, designed by Goudy and printed by Howard Coggeshall on Rosapina handmade paper. A presentation copy, inscribed on the colophon page to Marie Coggeshall and signed by those involved in the production of the book, including her husband Howard, Goudy, G. Leonard Gold, and Randall W. Bergmann. A beautifully produced book, which details the various items, books, and images which have been included in this time capsule. The capsule was buried in Septemner, 1938 in Flushing Meadows, NY, on the grounds of the planned 1939 New York World's Fair. It is meant to be opened in the year 6939, a full 5,000 years after that event. Included in this book are brief statements from Robert A. Millikan, Thomas Mann, and Albert Einstein. As one might expect, all of their statements, addressed to the masses of the future, are steeped in anxiety about the rise of dspotism in Europe, and they make a plea for rationality, democratic government, and the free exchange of ideas. There was a trade edition, which is widely held by libraries. While OCLC records are difficult to parse, we only count two definitive holdings of this limited issue, and only one of those is autographed--that copy just by G. Leonard Gold, and not the others. Indeed, the colophon does not call for any signatures, and we have been unable to locate in libraries or in commerce another texample signed by these same individuals. An important document of the 1939 World's Fair, as well as an excellent example of Goudy's work, rare in this issue.…

Store description

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.…
