About this Item
This is a very rare book. Once listed, it will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads:' For Kendall Lutkins with many, many thanks, René d'Harnoncourt.' Mr. d'Harnoncourt advised the former U.S. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller in the development of his extensive art collection. Kendall Lutkins was responsible for the decorative arts portion of Rockefeller's collection, including the Chinese pottery and porcelain. A Kathleen Haven is credited with the design of this book. It was compiled by the staff of the Museum of Modern Art. It consists of doodles and drawings by the artist that were made during staff meetings. This book was published in 1968, the year of René d'Harnoncourt's death at the hands of a drunk driver. The book is free of text. It has 28 pages and 33 illustrations. 'D'Harnoncourt was appointed to the Museum of Modern Art in 1944. He proved to be an expert exhibit installer and notable collector. In 1949 he was appointed Director of the Museum, a position he would hold until 1967. He was responsible for a series of significant exhibitions over the course of his tenure as Director, including Lipchitz (1954), Rodin (1963), and Picasso (1967). You can see the covers of this book in the photos provided. There are a few stains on the front cover and a few on the rear cover. The binding of the book is stapled and solid. The pages are nicely tight throughout. There is some yellow foxing off the bottom edge of the signed front end paper. Four early pages have one small yellowish spot off their bottom edge. Two pages at the middle of the book have some light recessed spotting. Two near the end of the book have another of these yellow spots of foxing. And the rear end paper has the same light recessed yellowish spotting. There was a bump/dent at the top corner of the front and rear cover and that created a small crease on both sides of the juncture between the facing pages. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And with the exception of Mr. d'Harnoncourt's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Seller Inventory # 003127
