Slone served as executive officer in Battery E and vowed to document the ordeal after surrender; the book is the result of years of research into the command failures that led to the battalion's capture, alongside the survivors' story of captivity and endurance. About a quarter of the men died in captivity, and more than half of survivors died from the effects of abuse and malnutrition ? a harrowing and historically important account.
