c. 1640-1660. Beautiful large etching on laid paper with large watermark. Samson, after killing the Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, uses it to drink from to quench his thirst. Dead Philistines next to him and in the background. A tapered composition with rounded top. In lower left corner signed in the plate "Guid. Ren. Pinx.". 38,8 x 32,2 cm.*Bartsch XIX, 213, No. 1: "On a de lui sept estampes très recherchées". Nagler XXI, 207, No. 1. In database of British Museum. Only state of an according to Bartsch most sought-after print. The name of the etcher is not stated, but the plate has always been given to Torre. Flaminio Torre/Torri, painter and etcher in Bologna, was a pupil of Guido Reni. The original painting "Sansone vittorioso", oil on canvas, painted by Guido Reni 1611-1612, is preserved in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. - Two small waterstains in blank margin, a few brown spots.
