This copy with the armorial bookplate of Anson Conger Goodyear (1877-1964), American industrialist and art collector from Buffalo, NY, mounted to front pastedown. Originally published in 1689, this compilation of Selden's bon mots includes the first appearance of an admonition popular with parents today, "Do as I say, not as I do" (p. 170; see American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms c1997).
