About this Item
1698 English Theater Defense Against Jeremy Collier Plays Dennis & Congreve 2in1 Two late 17th-century English works bound as one both of which were critical responses to Jeremy Collier. Collier was an English theater critic who controversially attacked English comedies. Collier s wrote on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices. John Dennis was an English dramatist known for his critical reviews of playwrights as well as his defenses against Collier. The Usefulness of the Stage was one of these defenses. William Congreve s plays seemed to be the most attacked by Collier. Congreve subsequently wrote his own work, Amendments , in hopes of calming the harshness aroused by Collier s Short View .
