En plena agitación universitaria de los años sesenta, un viejo profesor se ve implicado en un confuso incidente que provoca su expatriación. La reconstrucción de su peripecia saca a la luz la inexplicada desaparición de un estudiante. Hasta aquí, podría parecer un mero retrato de la represión franquista. Sin embargo, los testimonios de reprimidos y represores, víctimas y beneficiarios del régimen, en constante diálogo con el lector ―y con el autor mismo― sitúan la controversia sobre la memoria en un infrecuente lugar: la memoria no es aquí respuesta, sino la única pregunta válida.
El vano ayer está muy lejos de ser otra novela sobre nuestro pasado reciente. Es una original aproximación al franquismo proyectada sobre sus consecuencias aún vigentes y basada en una apuesta formal contraria a la frecuente aceptación literaria de esquemas preconcebidos. Sorprendente y movediza, supone una llamada de atención sobre las trampas de una memoria sentimental y decorativa que desemboca en formas próximas a la nostalgia y anula por igual responsabilidad y sufrimiento.
Mediante la fórmula de la novela en marcha, y utilizando una ironía que realza los aspectos más trágicos de la narración, Isaac Rosa expone los cimientos, los mecanismos de la novela, para que el lector sea consciente de ciertos espejismos ―nada inocentes― y decida si quiere caer en ellos.
