ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

IN IMPERIAL, CULTURED, AND DECADENT VIENNA, TWO FAMILIES INTERTWINE THEIR FATES IN A STORY OF SECRET PASSIONS AND HIDDEN ORIGINS.

Alfred trades his Bible and corksrew for newspapers and steaming cups of coffee, determined to write down his own destiny. Franz, his son, finds his utopia in the practice of surgery. Lis, the daughter of a bourgeois family, rebels: she studies medicine, undergoes psychoanalysis with Freud’s disciples, becomes active in the leftist movement, and turns the salons of the upper class into a cover for clandestine meetings.

Meanwhile, Nazism advances, and the time comes to make extreme decisions. Amid cabarets, uprisings, love affairs, friendship, and barricades, La vida en rojo portrays the fall of one world and the birth of another in this family saga, whose characters question their very identities. A novel about the question that spans an entire century: on which side of history do we choose to live?
