Half calf, excellently rebacked, spine with gilt twist bands, red gilt morocco label. ESTC T96541. First published in 1778, Stuart's thesis is that the feudal system, developed after the fall of the Roman Empire, allowed a certain amount of liberty to citizens, subsequently lost. The work 'forms a history of chivalry in Europe' examining the role of the sexes, and the place of religion in society, and the importance of manners.
