18, [1] p.; 21.5 cm. (Parkes Library pamphlets ; 10) Given at 14th Conference of Anglo-Jewish Preachers in May 1962. `One last word, there are times when we feel saddened and disappointed, that so many people today appear to be shallow and superficial--the `couldn't care less' attitude, but the balance is amply redressed when we visit the sick and witness the courage and fortitude, the quiet and serene faith with which ordinary people face great crises in their life. I have sat at the bedside of a woman afflicted with a fatal illness who spent all her conscious moments planning a future for her children which she knew she would never share. I have watched a man aware of his hopeless condition, pretending that he did not know, and responding to the comforting words of his family with an assumed cheerfulness. I have been called to a young doctor stricken with polio who asked me to pray with him, and as we recited the 27th Psalm together, I felt faith flowing into him like a healing current. I have seen men and women facing serious operations with quiet dignity, and individuals enduring pain and incapacity with serenity and faith. These are experiences which fill us with humility and reverence as we stand in awe in the presence of real courage and deep and abiding faith. To see the spirit triumph over fear and pain and ordeal--this is our unsought and highest reward.' (p. 18) VG, stapled, blue on white self-cover.
