Ethnography Gallery: The way of life of seven different peoples

Tutorial Texts

The Ethnography Gallery illustrates the way of life of seven different groups of people: North- west Coast Indians, Australian Aborigines, Plains Indians, Eskimo, Maasai, Fijians and Ibo. For convenience the Tutorial Text for each group is issued separately.

Each Tutorial Text consists of copies of the following: the Introduction to the Gallery; the Lay- out Plan of the exhibition cases; the Case Labels which contain background information to the group of people concerned under general headings such as Hunting, Costume, Domestic Life etc; the Object Labels which provide details concerning the purpose and function of the indivi- dual exhibits, and a Bibliography.

With the exception of the Bibliography all the material in the Tutorial Texts also appears in the exhibition, which is designed to be understood by itself. However, we hope that teachers may find it useful to know what the exhibition contains in order to prepare themselves and their students before a visit, and it is for this reason, and because we realise that much of the back- ground ethnographic information may be hard to find in school textbooks, that we have made the gallery labels available in this way.

The idea is an experiment: the Director and Staff who prepared the Ethnography Gallery would like to know how effective the Tutorial Texts have been in helping teachers and other educationalists to plan their visit and use the exhibition, and your comments and suggestions are welcomed.
