why crying is actually good for you: A guide to understanding emotion, stress, and why letting it out matters

Why do we cry — and why have we been taught not to?

From a young age, many of us are told to hold it in. To stay strong. To keep going, no matter how we feel. Crying is often seen as a sign of weakness, something to hide or apologise for.

But what if that belief is wrong?

Why Crying Is Actually Good For You explores the science, psychology, and social understanding behind one of the most natural human behaviours — emotional crying. Drawing on academic research and real-life experiences, this book challenges common misconceptions and offers a new perspective on emotional expression.

Inside, you’ll discover:

• Why humans cry and what it means
• The biological and psychological effects of crying
• How stress and emotional build-up impact your body
• Why society discourages emotional expression
• The role crying plays in coping, processing, and wellbeing
• When crying helps — and when it doesn’t

With a focus on student life, stress, and modern pressures, this book offers a relatable and accessible exploration of emotion that goes beyond academic theory.

This is not a clinical textbook.

It is a practical, human guide to understanding your emotions — and learning that feeling them does not make you weak.

It makes you human.
