Contemporary brown morocco with title on spines and rich gilt on boards and spines, all edges gilt, rich broad inside borders gilt. A beautiful binding: in between a blind-tooled frame 6 gilt fillets and floral gilt tooling. Slightly rubbed and knocked; though the text-pages are foxed throughout, nearly all plates are fresh; the engravings in fine printings. 2 handwritten POIs on flying endpapers. Provenienz: Auf den Vorderspiegeln die Exlibris von Wolfgang von Oettingen (1859 Dorpat - 1943 Bonn), Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaftler, Direktor des Goethe-Museums in Weimar (ab 1909) und des Goethe-Schiller-Archivs (ab 1911); das Exlibris eine datierte Radierung (1898) von Arthur Kampf aus Aachen, hochgeehrt, oft verglichen mit A. Menzel, Präsident von Akademien, Professor etc. (vgl. Th./B. 19, 506f). Auch für den deutschen Kommentator/Verleger (Lichtenberg, Dieterich) ist die Trusler-Ausgabe von Hogarth' Satiren neben der John Ireland-Ausgabe die zuverläßlichste Quelle.
