He shows how the self-deprecating leader was shaped into a national hero by the peculiar concerns of young America, distrustful of concentrated power and man's ability to resist its temptations. Despite Washington's shortcomings in both military and political affairs, society's own needs and values created a heroic cult around him. By his self-control and his immunity to political ambition Washington expressed America's desire to keep power within decent bounds. It is that example of a man of great moral character that Presidents in our time have ignored as they have corrupted government into a tool for their private use.
